You can even opt for bathroom candles that give off sweet, natural scents as they burn away, taking away all your worries and tensions before you peacefully retire to bed for a night of sound sleep and wonderful dreams. This soothing and serene atmosphere can be made possible by simply investing in some quality scented candles.

Candles do have some practical applications as well. Since time immemorial, candles have been used to light up homes. Although electrical lights have replaced candles in most homes, they can still come in handy to offer some much needed lighting when the power is out. Having some candles lit even when the power is on is not a bad idea. If there is a power blackout, you will not have to fumble in the darkness to find a flashlight or some candles. With some candles shining, you may not even wish for the lights to come back on.

For home decoration purposes, candles can be crafted using various attractive designs. They can be in the form of traditional wax candles placed on metallic stands or oil-based candles held in glass jars. The candles can be scented or unscented depending on the mood you want to achieve. Scented candles are excellent for setting a calm mood or atmosphere in your home. You should know that there are plenty of scents to choose from. Some people may prefer unscented candles as some scents may cause allergic reactions. Homeowners with young infants and pets may also prefer unscented candles as opposed to scented candles for decorative purposes.

When decorating your home with candles, it is important to do so in a subtle and safe manner. Safety is key when dealing with candles as they can be a potential fire hazard. Because of this, you need to use proper stands and flame covers with all your candles. Also, you need to be mindful of where you place the candles. Avoid places with a lot of traffic or near flammable objects. In addition, you should keep the candles away from draperies and curtains as these can catch fire easily.

Another important consideration you should make is in regards to the decor. Using candles as home decor is a fantastic idea but you should not go overboard or use too many candles. Keep it nice and simple so that you do not have to spend loads of cash on candles every now and then.

How Safe Are Candles for Children and Pets?

It may come as a surprise to many, but candles can pose a severe health risk both to children and pets. If you’re the type of person who can’t live a day without lighting a scented candle, then you may want to rethink your habit. Studies show that 70% of households still use scented candles to freshen up a room or mask odors. This industry is worth a whopping $3.2 billion. But you should always be careful where your family’s safety is concerned. Keep reading to learn just how safe candles are for children and pets.

The Problem with Synthetic Fragrances

Let’s get scientific for a bit. Most of the candles available today are made from paraffin. It’s a kind of wax made from petroleum. After being burned, the paraffin releases carcinogenic soot, causing or aggravating respiratory problems like asthma and heart issues as well.

Paraffin doesn’t have any smell, so manufacturers rely on artificial fragrances to make their candles more appealing to the masses. At the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, one scientist pointed out that scented candles have between 800 to 1,5000 chemicals. Each has its unique characteristics. The complex fragrances typically have more chemicals in them. Interestingly, air fresheners also contain these same chemicals. And for this reason, they pose the same health risks to users.

The candle industry would insist that their candles wouldn’t cause any harm to people or pets, but common sense would say the opposite. While only a few studies have been done to show the correlation between the use of scented candles and resulting health issues, it’s best to be aware of the many potentially chemicals to which children and pets in your home are exposed.

In a 2013 article published on Environmental Health Perspectives, a strong connection was shown between exposure to phthalates and the development of asthma in children. Studies show that phthalates disrupt the endocrine system, leading to congenital disabilities, diabetes, and even cancer. The Environment Watch Group includes it in their “Dirty Dozen,” a list of the top 12 chemicals for hormone disruption.

Even the wicks used in candles can pose a threat to the health and safety of children and pets. Low-cost candles, particularly those imported into the US, contain wicks made of lead-core. The safe choice is 100% cotton or a paper wick.

A candle that uses a lead-core wick releases 500% more lead than the minimum amount considered hazardous for children. This also goes beyond the EPA pollution standards, which is why these wicks were banned in 2003. In many countries, however, lead-core wicks are used because they’re cheap. Since many consumers could care less about the wicks on their candles, they risk exposing their children and pets to dangerously high levels of lead, causing behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and hormone disruption.

So, does this mean you should never light a candle again? Don’t worry; there’s no need to say goodbye to your candle addiction. But instead of opting for scented candles, stick to soy, blue corn, and beeswax candles. These candles don’t contain synthetic fragrances, which means none of the harmful chemicals. You should double check that the source for the candles is non-GMO to be sure. The aromatherapy benefits wouldn’t be there, but at least you still have a perfectly safe candle to use when you need one.

Of course, you should also be a responsible pet owner and ensure that your pets won’t get anywhere near the flame. Many pets get curious when they see a lighted candle. They might decide to play with it, opening up the possibility of lighting your house on fire. Surely, you wouldn’t want this scenario to unfold. At the very least, make sure that your pets (and kids) can’t touch the candles. You should also consider placing the candles inside glass cylinders so they wouldn’t cause a fire even if they’re tipped over.

Candles may be seemingly inconspicuous, but they might be wreaking havoc in your home without even knowing it. Take action right now and make the necessary changes. While it’s difficult to say goodbye to your scented candles, it’s something you have to swallow if it means keeping your children and pets in tiptop shape.

How To Make Candles From Scratch

A lot of people like candles and enjoy having them around the house. If you are one of these people, you might want to know how to make your own candles from scratch. This is not as hard as many people imagine as all you need is the right items and some time.

What You Need

To make your own candle, you are going to need certain items. The most important will be the wax for the body of the candle. This can be bees wax, soy wax or a special candle wax mixture that you are able to buy from many hobby stores.

You will also need a large candle wick which can also be bought from a hobby store. If you want to make scented candles, you need some fragrance oil. You will also need a pair of chopsticks or two pencils.

You will also need to have a double boiler and a heat-proof container. A spatula and a thermometer will also be required.

Measure And Melt The Wax

To start your candle, you will need to measure out the amount of wax that you need to fill your heat-roof container. Once you have this amount, you should double it as this is the amount of wax that you need to melt. It is recommended that you do this in a clean and flat area where there is nothing that you do not want to get wax on.

Once you have the wax measured out, you need to place it in the double boiler. Allow the wax to melt for around 10 to 15 minutes. While the wax melts, you need to stir it regularly to disperse the heat and ensure that all the wax is melting at the same rate.

Add Your Fragrance Oils

If you are making a scented candle, you will need to add your fragrance oils to the melted wax. The amount of oil that you should be using will vary depending on the type of wax you are melting. You need to be careful with the oils as you do not want to use too much as it will make the scent of the candle too powerful.

To add the oil to the wax, you simply have to drop it in while the wax is in the double boiler. You should stir the wax for a few seconds after adding the oil to completely mix it.

Attach The Wick

Once your wax is melted, you need to attach the wick of the candle to the bottom of your heat-proof container. There are a few ways that you can do this, but the best is to use some of the melted wax. To do this, you will need to dip one end of the wick into the melted wax and then quickly stick it to the bottom of the container.

You will need to leave the wick for 5 minutes as this gives it enough time to harden. If you want to use a different method, you could superglue the wick to the bottom of the container.

Pour The Wax

You need to let the wax cool for a few minutes or until it is at a temperature of 140F. You should place the wax into a container that is easy to pour from such as a measuring jug. You can then start to pour the wax into your heat-proof container which has your wick.

As you pour the wax, you will need to hold the wick in place. However, you should not pull on the wick because this could cause it to detach from the bottom of the container. You need to leave a small amount of wax in the double boiler for topping off the candle later.

Secure The Wick

Once the wax has been poured, you need to secure the wick to ensure that it does not sway in the melted wax. This is where your pencils or chopsticks will come in handy. You should sandwich the wick between them and play them across the top of the container to center the wick as the wax hardens. The wax should then be allowed to set.

Adding More Wax

If you have a candle that has hardened with tiny holes and cracks on the top, you should reheat the left over wax and pour it on top of the candle. Once this has set, you will be able to trim the wick to a manageable level.
